A terrific tournament won by Mardy Fish, in the midst of his comeback (and breakthrough) year on the ATP tour at the age of 28. Fish outlasted Atlanta favorite, a University of Georgia graduate, John Isner 4-6, 6-4, 7-6(4) in the finals to win back-to-back tournaments for the first time in his career. This inaugural tournament, which launched the Olympus US Open Series, was held at the Atlanta Athletic Club, and marked the return of the ATP tour to the Atlanta area for the first time since 2001. The weather was characteristic of the city's summer months, featuring 90+ degree heat, high humidity, and court-side temperatures that exceeded 100 degrees. I took this picture from our box seats:
The 2011 Atlanta Tennis Championships will be held at the Racquet Club of the South, July 18-24, and will once again launch the US Open Series season.
