If you want to see men’s professional tennis, the ATP tour is coming to downtown Atlanta’s Atlantic Station for the BB&T Atlanta Open; qualifying rounds start this weekend and first round matches begin next Monday, July 16.
The tournament - formerly known as the Atlanta Tennis Championships - is entering its third year as the start of the (Emirates Airline, formerly Olympus) U.S. Open Series, which is comprised of ATP men’s and WTA women’s tournaments that lead to the final Grand Slam of the year: the 2012 U.S. Open will be held in Flushing Meadows, New York, from August 27 through September 9.
This year’s field is headlined by the tournament’s two-time defending champion Mardy Fish, two-time finalist John Isner, and Andy Roddick. Also appearing are Brian Baker, Ryan Harrison, James Blake, Donald Young, Xavier Malisse, Nicolas Mahut, Kei Nishikori, Kevin Anderson, Dmitry Tursunov, Alex Bogomolov Jr., Yen-Hsun ‘Randy’ Lu, Gilles Muller, Jack Sock, Lukas Lacko, Paolo Lorenzi, Marinko Matosevic, Leonardo Mayer, and Go Soeda. Additionally, Colin Fleming and Ross Hutchins, Scott Lipsky, Matthew Ebden, and former Georgia Tech player Kevin King are among those in the doubles draw.
As I did during last year’s tournament, next week I will be posting ‘insider’ updates (most likely the morning after) each day that I work as a scorekeeper and/or court monitor and after the finals on Sunday, July 22, which I will be attending for the third straight year ... even though our A-9 ALTA mixed doubles team will likely be hosting a playoff match that morning.
